When it comes to owner-operated explorers under 80’/24M, few yachts rival BUFFALO NICKEL (78’/24M). Built in aluminum by the highly respected Circa Marine Industries Shipyard in Auckland, New Zealand, this FPB 70 was crafted with long-distance cruising in mind, incorporating efficiency, speed, and safety at every turn. BUFFALO NICKEL was designed by world-renowned sailor and multi-circumnavigator Steve Dashew, featuring a custom interior by Sylvia Bolton.
As described by Steve and Linda Dashew, the goal of the FPB design is to create a yacht that offers a safe, comfortable, and reliable long-distance cruising experience. The FPB paradigm blends seagoing capability with comfort, engineering systems that allow for extended off-grid cruising while minimizing maintenance and crew requirements. BUFFALO NICKEL is the epitome of this philosophy, delivering an unmatched balance of reliability, comfort, and ambiance.
Designed for owner operation, BUFFALO NICKEL offers ample accommodations for guests on the lower deck. The lower deck is thoughtfully laid out, beginning with the Owner's Stateroom forward. This space features a queen berth on centerline with a leather-wrapped bedframe, an upholstered settee, and marble-topped storage cabinets, a head and shower/tub ensuite, all set against a backdrop of sublime woodwork with light horizontal grain. The adjacent office provides ample outlets and access to yacht systems, while the supplemental refrigeration space offers additional storage with large Sundanzer units. The 2 guest staterooms are located aft and offer a double berth in the portside stateroom and single over/under bunks in the starboard stateroom. Both guest staterooms include ensuite heads and showers, ensuring privacy and comfort for all aboard.
Functionality defines the main deck. The main salon is light and airy, with large windows offering panoramic views and custom electrically controlled roller blinds for privacy. The U-shaped galley provides ample counter space, stainless steel fittings, and a vinyl wood-plank floor. The adjacent L-shaped settee/dining area is a comfortable and stylish space to relax, with views that enhance the experience. Forward, the main helm is centered, equipped with a Stidd helm chair.
The aft deck is designed for outdoor living, with aluminum decks featuring Treadmaster overlays for durability and safety. The aft-facing settee is sheltered from the elements, making it a perfect spot to relax. A BBQ station with Corian countertops, a sink, and ample prep space enhances the outdoor experience. Twin aluminum masts with booms are positioned aft, supporting tender operations and flopper stoppers. The swim platform, accessible via a stairway, includes a watertight door leading to the lazarette.
The enclosed bridge deck offers a commanding view of the surroundings with safety glass on three sides. Roll-up clear panels provide ventilation and access to the work deck, mast-mounted equipment, and a 12-solar-panel array. Inside, the bridge deck features an L-shaped serving counter with storage and a sink, as well as cushioned lounging areas for relaxation.
The expansive aluminum sun deck offers endless possibilities for sunbathing, entertainment, or even drone launching. With tie-down points for securing cargo, this versatile space is a standout feature on a yacht of this size.
Built to Lloyds SSC structural code and MCA Class II Pleasure Vessel standards, BUFFALO NICKEL exemplifies the ultimate world cruiser. With a range of 4,000 nautical miles at 10.1 knots, she is the perfect blend of safety, endurance, efficiency, quality, speed, and economy. Complemented by a beautifully appointed interior, BUFFALO NICKEL is the ideal long-distance cruising yacht for the serious owner-operator. Having traveled from New Zealand to Australia, Indonesia, Japan, Alaska, and beyond, BUFFALO NICKEL is now moored in Vancouver, British Columbia, ready for her next adventure.
